Black & white people, if you meet someone with your last name of the other race, how do you react?

For example, when you are black and meet a white person with your last name or vice versa.

My last name is far more common for black people than white, and when I meet them, I ask what part of the country their family is from to see if we're related.

A black checker at my grocery store noticed my last name on my club card is the same as hers, and now she calls me cousin.

I wonder if other people think of it the same way or at all.

Black %26amp; white people, if you meet someone with your last name of the other race, how do you react?
My grandfather was named Raymond Lewis Williams. There was a black man in the same city whose name was Raymond Louis Williams. Both were listed in the phone book as Raymond L. Williams, so the frequently got 'the other one's calls' and so when my Grandpa called him to tell him about a call he'd received for the other man, they became 'good friends' and were friends for the rest of their lives. I LOVE THAT STORY. This is not JUST the same LAST name, but the same first name and even the same middle name just another spelling ... but they said 'they felt like twins' and that is 'the whole story' to me.
Reply:It is not out of the question that you are cousins with the checker.
Reply:we are all related if you go back far anough

I would invite them to the family reunion
Reply:im neither race, but i dont see why it would matter
Reply:Well, there's the saying that it takes 9 people to connect to one person. Maybe they are related, maybe not. Honestly I think it's cool when I meet peopel of other races with my last name. It doesn't bother me at all.
Reply:Ive met some irish people with my name and they callme cousin. i know theres a chance because it is a clan name but which because there are 2 spellings slaves spelled names as they sounded so there are some errors on documents
Reply:I don't - but my last name is very common. I tend to brush off any other people with my last name that I meet because it's most likely we aren't related. The idea of a huge multiracial extended family is pretty sweet though. I'd think it was cool.
Reply:i'd look at them, put my hands up and laugh while saying...

"thomas jefferson"

hahaha
Reply:I wouldn't call someone cousin if they had my last name and they were the same color as me.
Reply:Nothing!

We should all be on first name basis anyways! ONE RACE! HUMAN!
Reply:if you have a common last name like johnson or smith why would you care
Reply:My last name is Irish, so it's never happened. But I would be totally cool with it.
Reply:I wouldn't assume that at all. see ya!
Reply:Well, names in America for blacks come from the slave master who owned their fore parents in most cases, often if a slave had a kid, they would name the kid after the master(sometimes first and last names). In some cases, the master crept into the black female quarters, and did the wild thing and got her pregnant,so,in some cases, you could be related across color lines.peace!
Reply:I would think.... cool.
Reply:OMG-LMAO!

Yep! I would say your probably the only person who ever gave it thought!.

(PS) Just for the record, she was only kidding around when she called you "cousin".
Reply:I would be interested. Probably be like, "Yo whats up fam! where have U been? tell me about your life!" Family is family, color dont have a bind over family. I wouldnt be surprised if my cousin came from the other side of the world. My last name is Irish, but im black.
Reply:Its surprising. Try to find out if really relatives. In my familly we keef finding relatives all over the world but never another race. I wouldnt mind. Just get to know each other we are relatives or not.
Reply:know ones going to have my last name! its german. im white.
Reply:I'd think ...Cool same name...Thats about it.
Reply:it hasnt happened but it wouldnt bother me at all

they took some of them in the slavery days
Reply:The slave name thing makes me think that once upon a time my family may have been well off because there are more blacks with my last name as well, but now..... well, my family is dirt poor! lol
Reply:There's actually someone at work (who is white) with the same last name as I but our paths haven't yet crossed - it's pretty remarkable, since my name isn't really a common name to begin with.
Reply:yeah i have a couple of people say that to my friend. But they do think back to race and slavery, becase the masters did have sex with the slaves and made babies. But whatever the deal, its great to know we are all related..
Reply:I doubt that would happen to me. My people didn't come to this country until the beginning of W.W. 1.
Reply:I'm white and I've never met anyone outside of my family with my last name. I don't know how I would react. I'd probably be surprised no matter what race they were.
Reply:how am i supposed to react?
Reply:I am white and if someone of another race has the same last name as me I don't care.
Reply:it has never happened
Reply:Never fazed me, 'course my maiden name was Miller and Millers pop up everywhere. If I met someone with my married name I'd be curious, it's a lot more uncommon.
Reply:I'm from the south my last name is Jones, and my grandmother was half white....
