How can I meet new people?

I have been living in a new town for 2 1/2 years. For over 2 years I worked from home (marketing) and spent much of my time either working or raising my 5 kids. I am now on an "indefinite leave" which I needed badly (depression really set in because of my lack of interaction with ANY adults other than my husband.) Now, I have my days free (since my children are all in school) and I have no idea HOW to meet new people? Any ideas? I can't very well just stand in the middle of the street and say "Hey, you wanna be my friend?"

i am bad about this myself...i have lived in houston now for 2 years and dont know anyone...i work overnights so like you a majority of my time has been spent in my home...catching up on sleep mostly....but things i do to try and meet people are joining sport groups...i play softball in the spring...or a great site to go to is meetup.com....it has all different kinds of interest groups and you can find things in your area that are going on...check it out ..good luck to you
