What is a good way to meet people in New York City.. ?

We were wondering how easy it would be to meet or chat with someone from NYC so that way when we move there we would know someone there already. We just moved down to texas a few months ago, after a family member passed away and we hate it.. our dream is NYC... any good options for meeting people in NYC?
